Big Brother Mouse is a difference
A new way of thinking about publishing Laos
Traditionally, books have been rare in Laos. The number of children going to school is slow but steady increase, but many children have never read a book outside of textbooks. Few Laotians believe that reading can be fun, can add to their education or provide information to improve their quality of life.
Indeed, in the past, he could not do any of these things. Very few books have been published in Laos, and they never reached most villages where people live.
Big Brother Mouse intends to change that. This publishing project was launched by an American publisher to retire several students working with brilliant and dedicated in Lao. Our staff now includes high school students and recent college graduates. Together, we look at the books that children are most popular around the world. We believe that the underlying concepts made the best-selling books. Then we ask if these concepts could be used in Laos, with new content and photos of Laos.
Our first six books from the press in March and April 2006. Some are just Lao, others are in both Lao and English, which makes them useful not only for our main audience - the children of Laos - but also for people of any age who speak English or Laos, and they learn another language.
In our first year we published 30 books. Now, we continue to publish new books, while also developing ways to get books in rural villages who have never had.
What is different about Big Brother Mouse?
Big Brother Mouse is not an NGO. It is a nonprofit organization, Lao-owned project with Lao staff. Volunteers from abroad are useful in many ways, but everyone shares the goal of helping young Laotions to acquire new skills.
When we book a party rural, or a drawing competition in schools, young men and women Lao directing the activities and make presentations. For these children, it may be not only the first time they have discovered that books can be fun, but also shows a wider range of jobs possible they themselves could organize a day. We
