Influenza A (H1N1) - update on the situation at 1 September 2009

1. Situation in Laos:
According to national health authorities and the World Health Organization ( WHO), the total number of cases of influenza A (H1N1) recorded in Laos since the first case last June, is to date again 242.Aucun deaths due to influenza A (H1N1) is regrettable since the July 17 death of a 31 year old man living in the province of Bolikhamxay and whose health was fragile. Most patients do not present other than very mild symptoms. Only a few patients had to be hospitalized. Friendship Hospital in Vientiane has been designated as the main venue and treatment of patients.
Cases are mainly concentrated in the capital and the provinces of Vientiane and Bolikhamxay followed by those Khamouane, Savannakhet, Champassak, Luang Prabang, and to a lesser extent, the provinces of Saravane, Phongsaly and Bokeo.
Increasing numbers of people affected and the appearance of the first cases of transmission between humans have led the Lao authorities to raise the alert level national plan for level 4 to level 5 and to intensify measures public information and provincial authorities. The National Coordinating Office on infectious diseases (NEIDCO) organized a first multisectoral simulation exercise aimed at the continued operation of vital sectors in the event of a pandemic (energy, transport, communication, tourism, education, media and security) .
The Ministry of Health decided, on the recommendation of WHO, not to report individual cases. WHO and Lao authorities expect an increase in the number of cases in the weeks and months ahead.
2. Global situation:
The latest data released by WHO have reported 177 457 cases of influenza A (H1N1) in 168 countries and 1,159 deaths.
The border states of Laos have registered cases of influenza A (H1N1) following Thailand: 10 043 cases, 81 deaths China: 9159 cases, 5 deaths Vietnam: 1275 cases, 2 deaths Cambodia Burma 24 cases: 20 cases
3. Recommendations: If
flu symptoms (fever above 38.5 °, sore throat and / or headache, cough), it is recommended to call the Medical Office of the Embassy of France (021 21 41 50 / 020 65 54 794) or the Office of National Coordination-NEIDCO (emergency call number 166).
4. Drug Treatments:
A specific vaccine (H1N1) will not be available until fall 2009. Pending its availability, it is imperative to follow a set of preventive measures, only capable of fighting as effectively as possible against the spread of the virus. In addition, vaccination seasonal despite its inefficiency on the H1N1 virus, is preferable not to combine the risk.
curative treatments (Tamiflu or Relenza) are to be used only on medical prescription only for the patient himself. Their administration is more effective when it occurs within 24 to 48 hours after onset of symptoms.
5. Preventive measures: Limit attendance
gathering places unventilated and ensure the ventilation of rooms used for residential or office;
Ensure regular and thorough washing of hands to be effective, must wash last at least 30 seconds and stress between the fingers and nails. It can be done with liquid soap or alcohol-based;
regular cleaning of the surfaces of faucets, doorknobs, computer keyboards, mice and handsets;
For those in contact with the public or sick, wear a mask FFP2 for sick people, wear a surgical mask to avoid contamination of the environment;
Pay special attention to those most vulnerable: pregnant women, children with asthma, obese children;
Avoid contact with sick people, the risk of contagion starts 24 hours before the onset of the disease and lasts for 5-6 days after onset of illness on average incubation period is 4 days on average;
Consult a physician in case of fever or flu symptoms;
Avoid close contact with children under one year;
Observe usual rules of courtesy: the use and protection of tissues of the mouth when coughing.
