Terminals: Bandung and the Birth of the Third World



Nehru and Zhou Enlai met at the Afro-Asian Conference in Bandung, which Nehru was the great instigator, and that took place in April 1955.


From 18 to 24 April 1955 held in Bandung on Java island, the first Asian-African Conference, which brings together twenty-nine countries, most of which are decolonized recently and belong to the Third World. The initiative for the summit include, in particular Indian Prime Minister Nehru, eager to build on the international stage a set of powers that would escape the superpowers and the logic Cold War. The text adopted at the end of the conference rejects racism and colonialism, calling for a global economic cooperation in the fight against underdevelopment and attempts to promote a charter of relations between states. But it fails to determine a common line against the United States and the USSR: the non-aligned nations like India and Egypt oppose the one hand, the pro-Western countries like Pakistan or Turkey, and other Communist countries like China and North Vietnam.
